Google has launched Googlebook, a new category of laptops that run an Android-based operating system. Pre-orders opened on September 21 for five models from Acer, Asus, Dell, HP and Lenovo, priced from $899 to $1,349. The first devices reach US stores on October 4.

What was announced
Google first previewed Googlebook in May, after the platform had circulated in leaks under the codename Aluminium OS. It now has an official name, Googlebook OS. Google writes the software and the five partner brands build the hardware.
According to Google, the platform is designed around Gemini and works with Android phones out of the box. The company presents it as a premium product rather than a replacement for Chromebooks, which it says still serve schools and businesses where people share devices.
The details
Googlebook OS runs Android underneath with desktop features from ChromeOS on top, including resizable windows, a taskbar and a file manager. Native Android apps run alongside the desktop.
Google set a high hardware floor for the category. Every model starts with 16GB of memory, and some go up to 32GB. Displays are touch-enabled and reach up to 2.8K OLED. The laptops use aluminium, magnesium alloy or carbon fibre, with haptic glass trackpads and backlit keyboards. Processors come from Intel and Qualcomm and pair with NPUs rated above 45 TOPS. Google rates battery life at up to 14 hours.
Each Googlebook ships with a software bundle that includes 12 months of Google AI Pro, GeForce NOW cloud gaming and Luminar photo editing.
AI and phone continuity
Gemini is built into the desktop, including a feature Google calls Magic Pointer. Phone continuity is the other headline feature: users can pick up tasks from their phone, access phone files, and use phone apps on the laptop without installing them.
Google also says developer tools such as Claude Code and Antigravity CLI can run directly on the laptop.
Pricing questions
The launch prices put Googlebook in the same range as premium Windows laptops and Apple’s MacBook lineup. Reports also note that Google’s comparison page and the Google Store list different prices, with some models higher in the store. Acer has said its $899 price is a launch price that could rise as memory costs increase across the industry.
What happens next
Reviews are expected after the October 4 release and will show how Googlebook OS performs on this hardware. Google has not said whether a Pixel-branded Googlebook is coming. It also named MediaTek as a chip partner, although no launch model uses a MediaTek chip. Whether the platform reaches cheaper devices will depend on how buyers respond to this first premium wave.
